Time flies…

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Robert Llewellyn, ASIMO and Kate Thorton

The fact that as you get older the time flies by quicker is definitely true.. I can’t believe it’s March already and worse, that I turn 30 in five days time.

The main reason why time has been flying by (apart from age) is that 2010 has been a very exciting year so far for us all. We have started working with some great new projects such as the Emmanuel Schools Foundation on their Annual Conference taking place on the 1st April at the Sage Gateshead. The event is for all the 800 staff of the colleges and academies to celebrate the past 20 years of success and to look to the future.

We’re also getting close to the Symposium on Economic Development in the North East of England, a three day conference in Manchester that we are organising on behalf of The Northern Way. The event will see leading academics and policy thinkers flying in from Europe and America to take part in a strategic analysis of the underlying structural economic issues facing the North of England. As well as the two day Symposium, there is a dinner, a tour of regeneration sites in Salford and a drinks reception to organise.

Following the Symposium and the ESF conference, we have a few days to catch our breath and it’s on to the Class Awards, the biggest awards ceremony in the region with over 1400 guests. Exciting news that we have just confirmed Kate Thornton as the compere and we are all looking forward to working with her to make the night a continuing great success.

We are also concentrating our efforts on boom! The North East Engineering Show which is taking place in July but work is well underway. We have confirmed Robert Llewellyn from Scrapheap Challenge and Red Dwarf as the presenter who will bring his enthusiastic approach to engineering to the show – hopefully Kryton will also make an appearance! We have also confirmed Hondas involvement with their robot ASIMO and Nissan are on board with their electric cars. The hunt is on for more engineering companies to take part in the show and also fill the metro radio arena with exciting exhibits.

Finally, on a personal note, it’s been a great year so far for me as I have just been promoted to Marketing Director. It’s a really exciting opportunity and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into my new role, especially with the rest of this year looking like it’s going to be a lot of fun.

If you want to know any more about any of our projects or are interested in seeing what we can do for you, please give us a call.

Happy Valentine's Day From Fawthrop McLanders-Design and Marketing

A week in the life of an artworker…

This week, I discovered that you don’t need helium to reach the ceiling – just a Valentine’s Direct Mail campaign for existing and prospective clients featuring 30 heart shaped balloons.

It sounds simple but was more complicated than meets the eye.

First, identifying and cleansing the database to identify lucky recipients.

Second, testing, yes, we really did test the balloons. Starting with helium in rubber balloons (which deflates after a couple of hours) we then changed to foil balloons which do not allow the helium to escape (quickly).

We also needed appropriate boxes for mailing, helium for inflating and small packs of heart shaped biscuits to weight the balloons. This involved some ingenious sourcing and an interesting discovery with ribbon. Who’d have thought that a slip of satin, would drag the balloons down? So, just to try my patience further, lighter ribbon was required, so it was back to sourcing for me (thank you Hobbycraft).

Then, just as I was nearing completion, we ran out of helium. More problem solving and a trip to a balloon specialist and the job was again nearing completion. I’ve also learned a much easier way to tie the ribbon on, which didn’t involve wrestling the balloon to the ground and swearing at it.

So at last, they were all blown up, tagged and delivered. And, judging by the response of our recipients they were well received.

Happy Valentine’s Day x

ANSD at the Audition:Live

On an unusual Saturday, the Marketing Team from Fawthrop McLanders were busy taking on the role of Simon, Amanda and Piers at this year’s The Audition: Live.

As part of the Class Awards, Fawthrop McLanders were on the annual hunt to find the best talent the North East has to offer. We were once again amazed by the talent in the region, seeing everything from solo singers, bands and dance troupes to a man playing on junk!

After a very long but successful day, we have selected some top class, high impact acts that the audience is sure to love as much as we do. This year’s Class Awards are shaping up to be the best yet!

Safe in the City

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

FMA successfully answered Newcastle City Council’s Safe Neighbourhoods Christmas Campaign – Safe in the City.

The creative focussed on transport, violence and alcohol and aimed to make individuals who come into the city to enjoy a night out to think hard about their personal safety. The campaign also aimed to reduce levels of violence – particularly Violence Against the Person (VAP) and sexual offences.

The clear branding, direct headlines and messages were applied to leaflets, escalator panels, carriage cards and a range of posters.

boom! The North East Engineering show

We’ve been appointed by One North East as the event management company for boom! The North East Engineering Show. We’re already hard at work organising the venue – The Metro Radio Arena; the date – 14-16 July 2010; and the format of the show. We’ve got confirmation from Honda that their humanoid robot ASIMO will be the headline act and we are working on securing more amazing exhibits and speakers to make the show a must-see event. It will be free to attend and is aimed at young people aged 11-17. With a target audience of 7,000 people over the three show days, we’ve got plenty of work to do to promote the show.

A splash page, the precursor of the full website, is already up at www.boomnortheast.co.uk so any potential visitors, sponsors or exhibitors can register their interest.

What ‘type’ are you

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

When designing a new brand, the choice of typeface is an important decision to make as each typeface purveys a different message and emotion. So, your brand has a personality from your designers careful choice of typeface and imagery, but have you ever wondered what typeface you are? Probably not, but it’s a little bit of fun to find out!

This site was originally set up as a Christmas message from Pentagram, but we’ve just realised that the password works for anyone, so thought we’d share it with you. Visit www.pentagram.com/what-type-are-you and simply type in your name and the password “character” and off you go. A psychiatrist figure will then ask you a number of questions about your personality before diagnosing you with a typeface. A short film about your type will then play.

My type is “Archer Hairline” an elegant font designed by Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones www.typography.com/about/ – meaning I am outwardly composed, but will occasionally run into the bathroom for a quiet laugh or cry before returning to the world outwardly composed!

Post what “type” you are on our blog!

doom-pa-dee-do

As far as on street promotional activities go, the example experienced by Grey’s Monument yesterday was pretty good. If  Willy Wonka and his Oopma Loompa’s weren’t enough to grab your attention, the deal was sealed by a bar of chocolate giveaway, simple. The whole thing was made rather more surreal when the client I was with, happened to win A Golden Ticket, be surrounded by Willy and his orange friends and, end up unexpectedly in a photo shoot! All before lunch. Thank you 888ladies, Roald Dahl and Kelly (thank goodness you saw the funny side).

Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-dee-do
I have a perfect puzzle for you
Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-dee-dee
If you are wise, you’ll listen to me

Our events, PR, creative and digital experts are joining forces for The Celebration of Learning and Skills Success (Class) Awards. The combined expertise of our team enables us to deliver a high impact, integrated campaign which will culminate in the region’s biggest awards ceremony.

Following four successful years working on The CoLaS Awards, delivered on behalf of the Learning and Skills Council, we knew that there was a demand an awards ceremony dedicated to learning and skills in the region and we knew it had to continue.

Armed with a proposal, we approached One North East, Business Link North East and NEFEA (North East Federation of Enterprise Agencies) who saw merit in our plan and showed their support with all important sponsorship to turn the idea into reality.

And so, the 2010 ceremony will see over 1400 guests enjoy a spectacular ceremony at the Sage Gateshead on 23 April 2009. The region’s business leaders will join key employers, politicians, journalists, representatives from education and the families and friends of the nominees for an evening of entertainment and recognition of achievement.

Our Studio created the logo and web design and passed it to our Digital Team for build. The results are www.theclassawards.co.uk

Aspiring Annie Leibovitz

Here at Fawthrop McLanders, we understand the importance of top quality photography for our clients. Whether it’s to make a PR story come to life, promote and record an event or complement a design.

Given the credit crunch and increased pressure on budgets, we thought we’d try, as always, to offer our clients a more innovative and cost effective solution.

Last night, I started the first of six intensive evening classes in Digital SLR Photography. During the course, I will explore essential camera and Photoshop skills spanning all areas from capture and format to output. The aim is to enhance my skills and to enable FMA to offer basic photography solutions in house.

Of course, it will not negate the requirement for our talented suppliers, it may even supplement their work at times, however, it will mean that we are equipped with new skills, can offer a level of photography that is fit for purpose and can avoid unnecessary costs which can only be a good thing!

We hope you agree, and maybe I’ll be brave enough to post some of my work soon…

In the meantime, if you want to know more about how this could work for you, get in touch.
